Store History:
UMC opened it's doors June 17, 2003. Formerly known as the Ivory Palace, the store was the Redwood Empire's premier piano store for over 20 years. The new owner, Spencer Brewer, and his staff brought over 175 years of combined experience in retail, recording, performance, and the piano business... these guys are old! Their vision was to combine piano sales with a full line music store and offer the widest selection and superb service for northern California musicians.

Today, the Ukiah Music Center is much more than a simply retail store: it is a catalyst for musical expression and community development. Through store sponsored events (such as Acoustic Cafe, Band Slam, and Rock Camp), outfitting local schools with band equipment, the Ukiah Music Center is laying the foundation for musical growth in the Ukiah region.

As we continue to grow, we look forward to finding new ways to spread our love of music to our friends and family in northern California.

Staff Profile - Spencer Brewer

Spencer is a man of many persuasions as well as being the manager of UMC. He is an internationally recognized pianist, composer, record producer, promoter and entrepreneur. He also has had a life-long love affair and fascination with the piano. He records, plays, lectures, restores, repairs, tunes, buys, sells and sometimes does hospice and/or euthanasia on pianos of all makes and ages. When he is not doing music 'biz', he collects and restores old gramophones and cylinder players.

Staff Profile - Jef Brewer

Manager Jef has spent the better half of his life working in the music industry, working as a tech, engineer, stage manager, and photographer. He has a degree in Sound Arts and has produced and engineered numerous albums and demos... when he wasn't fishing.

Staff Profile - Michael Coughenour

Music Specialist

Besides being the person in charge of print music at the store, Michael has been teaching piano in Ukiah for nearly 25 years. He is a founding member of Ukiah School of Music. He has been an avid collector of recordings for 50 years and has an extensive knowledge of all genres of music. He also has many years of experience in the music retail business and has been with the store since it first opened.

Staff Profile - Agustin Cano

All Around Good Guy Agustin, originally from Michoacan, has been with the store for 16 years and not only knows where everything is, he seems to know how to do everything as well. He rebuilds pianos, refinishes anything with wood, and keeps all of us on track and running smooth. El Jefe Chico.

Staff Profile - T.J. Elton

Sales T.J. Elton has been in the entertainment industry his entire life.From modeling to stage set up to stunt and extra work for television. T.J. is currently the lead vocalist, guitarist & keyboardist in a local band the Felt-tips and also performs solo shows throughout northern California.
