This summer for the first time, the Ukiah Music Center will be hosting four 'Rock Camp' sessions for young musicians. Rock Camp will be four 5-day camp sessions with a concert on the Ukiah Music Center's Acoustic Café stage each Friday evening at the end of camp for the rocker's friends and family. Guitar, bass, drums, singing and keyboards will be taught throughout the camp session.

Each camp will begin at 9:00 each morning and will run for 2-3 hours with each rocker learning a new rock song a day and how to be in a functioning rock band. They will name their band, help create the concert poster and CD cover as well. There will be three camps for 9 to 13 year olds and one camp for 14 to 17 year olds. Each camp will be limited to 15 rockers who will break up into three separate bands throughout the week, culminating into a true rock concert starting at 7:00pm Friday night for all those that want to attend.

The camp schedule is June 23rd thru the 27th for 9-13 year olds with a special treat of performing together on the Ukiah Music Center float in the Redwood Valley Parade the morning of Saturday, June 28th. The second camp is July 7-11th for 9-13 year olds; the third camp will be held July 14-18th for 14-17 year olds and the final camp will be held August 4th thru the 8th. Each camp will have two instructors and the performance will be recorded with each rocker taking home a CD of their performance as well as an optional DVD. The instructors are Matt Cameron, Larry Puterbaugh, John Mattern, Kitty Rose and George Husaruk.....all professional rockers and instructors themselves.

What Rockers will accomplish throughout the week:

ˇ Learn from Professional Rockers how to put together and run a band
ˇ Learn how to put on a great LIVE SHOW
ˇ Learn four new tunes with a band and be able to TAKE DOWN THE HOUSE
ˇ Divide up into three bands and pick your band's name
ˇ Help design the Concert Poster
ˇ Help design the CD package cover
ˇ Play a LIVE GIG

The fee is $200 per rocker for the week and they will have to meet all the requirements in the registration form to participate. Registration forms (as well as more details) are available for download on the right side of this page or at the Ukiah Music Center, 745 N State St. Rock Camp attendees will fill up quickly, so don't wait... get your rocker signed up today.

Rock Camp is yet another way the Ukiah Music Center is trying to help and offset all of the educational music cutbacks as well as supporting our youth through creative and fun musical outlets.

Featured Instructor - Matt Cameron
Matt Cameron was surrounded by music at an early age. Born in Vallejo Ca, in 1967, he spent many hours alongside his grandfather, a professional musician and teacher. Matt's musical education continued in elementary school and junior high with the clarinet. By the time he reached High School, he had switched to guitar and spent three years performing with the Ukiah High Jazz band. After graduation, Matt's musical endeavors had three distinct directions: retail, performance, and teaching. He managed Frank Short's Music and Recording until May of 2004, and worked part time at the Ukiah Music Center. Matt started teaching guitar at the Ukiah School of Music part time in 1993. By 1997, teaching had become a full time job, and has since expanded to include bass, banjo, and a pilot 'Rock Band' project. Since 1987, Matt has played in several local bands, the most recent being Gigantic which he joined in 1997. From 1995 to 1997, he played guitar with the Mendocino College Jazz Ensemble, and attended Mendocino College, earning an Associate in Arts degree in Music: Instrumental. In addition to the guitar, bass, and banjo, Matt also plays the drums and keyboards. In his spare time, he writes music and records in his home recording studio.

Kitty's music has sent her all-cowgirl band packing - packing across the country that is to places like Nashville, Cincinnatti, Chicago, Atlanta, Toronta, Florida, Phoenix, guest appearances at the famous Bluebird Cafe in Nashville, and even a spot at Tootsies Orchid Lounge where Patsy and Hank used to hang between Grand Old Opry shows. At the same time a member of the Traditional Music Hall of Fame and a card-carrying member of NCLR, Kitty spans many diverse worlds with one common thread - a love of great country music.
